“ Dee Snipers”: - Sniper meaning a sharpshooter, a person who snipes or shoot from a cover.(Oxford Dictionary) We see ourselves as Rappers who snipe lyrically and are out to set the record straight “Our early musical influences included Ghetto Boys, Naughty by nature, Arrested Development, Dogg pound, Refugees, Nas, Tupac and Wu tang clan. Not much has changed lately”. Dee Snipers later reveals that their latter influences range from The Roots to Eminem to D12 to G unit . This kind of remark typifies the skills and humor that Dee Snipers carries on and off the stage. The group comprise of three dedicated and talented rap artist namely Explosive, Outshine, At-large. The group has cultivated a fan base almost entirely due to constant radio and TV airplay . No wonder listeners are engaged by Snipers catchy style of beats, resonant vocals and passionate lyrics. “Dee Snipers” began playing music in 2002 with Explosive and At large as its only members. Explosive composed the songs and performed it alongside At large. We were doomed from the very first day,” recalls Explosive. Before then, they started off with a group named “Kronics” in 1998. An underground Rap Hip Hop group with artist like Big Snob, Chess, OJezz. We joined the group because we wanted to expand our horizon and improve on our style of writing and stage performance lyricist. “They were da bomb then” said At-large. At first we were wannabes miming and performing songs at road shows, street carnivals etc. They called it “the basis of proper entertaining” Explosive quotes. Though we had our original beats and composed songs from time to time, being a wannabe at several shows at that particular time overshadowed everything else. Explosive attributes their transition from being a wannabe to composing and performing their own songs to a particular incident. One night we were to perform at a street carnival. There were 500 people in the crowd. The guys who organized the show told us we had to perform one original as a criteria to be on the artist line up. We had a couple of songs we could perform, but we were afraid of being rejected by the crowd. We went back stage for a sound check from then on became nervous. Alas, The moment came for us to hit the stage. We grabbed the microphone in front of the audience we started doing our thing. People actually applauded. we remember getting off the stage to people asking when we were playing the next show. For the first time, I thought we might have something to work with after all.” In 2002 “ Kronics” broke up. Big Snob went solo, Chess decided to go back to the hood , OJezz vanished from the music scène without a trace. ‘It was the end and then a new beginning for us’ said Explosive. He was considerably interested in writing of the songs and performance of the material being motivated by happenings around him. After spending a year of hanging out and writing lyrics in Lagos, he reconnected with At-large to form the group known as “Dee Snipers”. Our beats were produced by Ex-one who also featured in most of ours songs. In 2003, Outshine a solo rap artist from “Streetwise Entertainment” became affiliated to the group. We released a collection of raw demos for radio airplay and the internet. Listeners and critics alike responded with such encouragement that Dee Snipers continued to write and perform. Taking criticism in stride, the group is not disappointed. To quote At-large, “We were prepared for that, because we had so much material to choose from. We’ll just bring the audience along for the ride as we figure out where we’re going.” He made sure to finish with, “just wait ‘til u hear what’s coming.” In the last year, “Dee Snipers” has been able to complete their first album titled “Unfinished Business” 2005 currently storming the air waves plus (3) cool music videos. A seventeen track album with songs from R&B to Rap Hip Hop. With much accomplishment, we have been able to create a spot for ourselves in the Nigerian Music Industry. Our New Age Urban/Rap Hip Hop type of music has come to set the standards in Nigeria. “If Hip Hop is universal, then we are its branch down here” says Explosive. “Dee Snipers” independent success, with little publicity and no marketing, has been the result of relentless live performances, the radio, TV, word of mouth and the internet. The group has a great stage presence and deliver a wicked live show. The extremity in their performances leave you wanting more. All members have a professional, pleasant and appreciative disposition, and are a pleasure to work with. Recent experiences have proven that all the effort is paying off. “ the most hilarious things started happening this year. We received calls far from anywhere we had ever been before and the people were singing the song and requesting for the album. We were floored. That was an awesome moment. Dee Snipers will be on the road from August through October to promote the album. The current goal of the group is to tour as much as possible in support of their original material airplay. The group is very comfortable playing covers for corporate events or to cater to an audience
