Daize Shayne, a part-time resident of Costa Mesa, is in a good position to turn back the tide. She picked up her second world championship surfing title in Costa Rica last October, has a successful modeling career (GQ, Sports Illustrated, Longboard Magazine, Maxim) and has been a spokeswoman for major corporations such as MasterCard, Dr. Pepper and Gap. And although she has been singing and playing guitar for about a decade, her musical skills are only now drawing the kind of attention that has greeted her skills as a top athlete and on-camera personality.

She has teamed with Costa Mesa producer-songwriter Ken Tamplin and is busy readying a solo music release that could well be the antidote for young fans who want to hear something less calculated than offerings from the likes of Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne. Like the potent Pacific waves she rides, Shayne's music is rooted in forces that recall a time when rock was defined by the music itself more than downloading, record company mergers and Nielsen SoundScan sales reports.

Although bands such as AC/DC, Rush, KISS and Van Halen were launched long before Shayne was born, she grew up listening to her father's Led Zeppelin albums, as well as her older sister's Clash records. On songs such as "Why Can't You Understand Me," "Naughty Girl" and "Swallow Me Whole," the heavy vibe of the 1970s is blended with Shayne's lyrical tales of hope and strength that are drawn from her experiences living and traveling around the world, as well as from mentoring disadvantaged inner-city youth through a program offered through Oasis Christian Center in Hollywood.
